NG Natural Gas Transfer Station Equipment
Natural gas distribution stations serve as critical nodes in long-distance pipeline systems, functioning similarly to highway “entrances, exits, and service areas.” They connect upstream high-pressure, large-diameter trunk pipelines with downstream urban networks, industrial users, or secondary branch pipelines. Their primary mission is to receive, distribute, regulate, and control natural gas flow, ensuring safe, stable, and precise delivery to multiple downstream consumers.
As fixed, permanent large-scale facilities, metering stations significantly surpass skid-mounted units in scale, complexity, and automation levels.
Core Functions
The core functions of a natural gas distribution station can be summarized as “receive, measure, regulate, distribute, and maintain”:
1. Receive and Distribute
Receive high-pressure natural gas from upstream trunk lines.
Allocate natural gas to multiple downstream users (e.g., City A, City B, large factories) according to planning.
2. Purification and Filtration
Removes solid particulates (e.g., rust, dust) and liquid impurities (water, light hydrocarbons) from natural gas via filtration and separation equipment to protect downstream precision devices like pressure regulators and flow meters.
3. Pressure Regulation and Stabilization
This constitutes the hub’s core function. It progressively and stably reduces the high pressure from upstream trunk lines (e.g., 6-10 MPa) to the required pressure for downstream networks or users (e.g., 0.8-4.0 MPa).
A redundant design employing “working line + monitoring line + standby line” ensures uninterrupted gas supply even if any line fails, delivering extremely high reliability.
4. Trade Metering
This is another core function of the distribution station. High-precision flow meters (typically ultrasonic flow meters) are installed for each downstream user to perform accurate flow measurement.
The metered data here serves as the sole basis for trade settlement, involving significant economic interests, thus demanding the highest standards.
5. Emergency Shutdown and Venting
Emergency Shutdown Valves (ESD Valves) are installed to rapidly cut off the gas supply during emergencies such as fires, leaks, or overpressure at the station.
Through safety valves and venting valves, excess pressure is directed to the venting tower’s high point for combustion and discharge, ensuring the safety of station equipment and pipelines.
6. Pigging Operations
Equipped with pig launching and receiving devices to periodically send and receive pipeline inspection pigs (PIGs). These remove impurities and accumulated liquids from pipelines while conducting inspections, safeguarding transmission efficiency and safety of the mainline.
7. Data Acquisition and Monitoring (SCADA)
The entire facility is monitored by an advanced SCADA system for fully automated control. This system collects, controls, and remotely transmits real-time parameters including pressure, temperature, flow rate, and equipment status, enabling “unmanned operation with periodic inspections.”
